Matt Damon has opened up about the rigorous physical and dietary challenges he faced while portraying Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, "The Odyssey." The Academy Award winner, 55, described the production as the most demanding of his career, pushing both cast and crew to their limits.

"It was definitely the hardest movie I've ever done just because it was so ambitious, just because what he was trying to do," Damon shared during an appearance on "Sunday Sitdown with Willi Geist." He recalled Nolan's initial warning that the film would be "really hard," a statement Damon confirmed was accurate.

The extensive preparation required for the role, coupled with Damon's age, presented a significant personal challenge.

Filming took place in diverse and often harsh environments, including Moroccan beaches, mountaintops, and boats, leading to considerable physical discomfort for the entire team.

Damon likened the experience more to an expedition than a typical movie shoot, noting that everyone involved was pushed to their physical boundaries.

Despite the arduous conditions, Damon praised Nolan's leadership, highlighting the director's unwavering dedication and resilience.

He observed that Nolan, despite having the most demanding job on set, never complained, even when facing the same cold and wet conditions as the actors.

## Physical Transformation for Odysseus

Damon also elaborated on the significant physical transformation he underwent to embody the legendary Greek hero.

During an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce's "New Heights" podcast, Damon revealed he lost a substantial amount of weight for the role.

Nolan had a specific vision for Odysseus, wanting him to appear "lean but strong."

To achieve this, Damon adopted a strict diet, notably eliminating gluten.

This dietary change, initially undertaken for health reasons, proved instrumental in his weight loss.

He stated that he typically weighs between 185 and 200 pounds but maintained a weight of 167 pounds throughout the filming of "The Odyssey," a weight he hadn't seen since high school.

This commitment to a strict diet and intense training was crucial for meeting Nolan's vision.

Further discussing his lifestyle changes on Amy Poehler's "Good Hang" podcast, Damon described giving up gluten as "life-changing." He admitted that while he misses foods like bread, beer, pasta, and pizza, the positive impact on his overall well-being has been profound.

This revelation offers insight into the extreme dedication actors sometimes undertake for their roles, demonstrating the personal sacrifices made to bring a director's vision to life.
