The perceived gap between the hype surrounding artificial intelligence and its current real-world capabilities is becoming increasingly apparent, particularly in areas like book generation and education.

This comes as some tech enthusiasts are expressing puzzlement over why AI hasn't yet "massively disrupted" these fields.

On a now-deleted Reddit thread in the r/singularity forum, an AI enthusiast posed the question: "why hasn't AI text generation massively disrupted books yet, when it's technically capable?" The user highlighted that language and writing are considered the strongest abilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), suggesting that AI should be able to produce content like a sequel to a favorite novel.

This development matters to the audience because it directly addresses the practical limitations of AI in creative and educational applications, contrasting with widespread expectations.

However, as some commenters pointed out, a significant limitation for LLMs is their inability to maintain coherence over longer outputs, a phenomenon referred to as "context rot." This issue means that as an AI chatbot's response length increases, its capacity to keep all elements cohesive diminishes.

This limitation is cited as a reason why fully AI-generated books that appeal to human readers are not yet common, and why AI-generated video clips are typically very short.

Beyond books, the impact of AI on education has also been a point of discussion.

OpenAI staffer Ryan Brewer, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that garnered over 2.1 million views, voiced his frustration that AI "didn't create an educational renaissance." He questioned why it wasn't possible to learn a language in a month with AI, asking, "What did we get wrong?"

Attempts to integrate AI into education have reportedly faced challenges.

The technology's tendency to produce a mix of factual and fictional information without requiring users to independently verify or process information is seen as counterproductive to effective learning.

One user on X commented on this, stating, "It's so f**king depressing that so many people think this is how learning works," while another shared a screenshot of an AI chatbot prompt simply reading: "learn for me."
