Actress Amanda Seyfried has revealed that she was cast as music icon Joni Mitchell in a biopic that ultimately did not come to fruition.

The news comes as a disappointment to fans who have praised Seyfried's musical performances, particularly in Mona Fastvold’s *The Testament of Ann Lee*.

Seyfried shared details of the canceled project with GQ, explaining that the film was intended to focus on Mitchell and her manager, Elliot Roberts.

Roberts passed away before the film could be made, though Seyfried did have the opportunity to meet him.

In preparation for the role, Seyfried also met with Joni Mitchell herself for a steak dinner, during which they listened to Mitchell's seminal album, *Blue*, together.

Seyfried recalled Mitchell's observation after their listening session: “It’s sparse, isn’t it?”

To fully immerse herself in the character, Seyfried dedicated herself to learning every song from *Blue*.

She described the emotional experience of mastering the final track, “The Last Time I Saw Richard,” stating, “I felt like a bona fide musician, like I belong here.” This intensive preparation led to her appearance on *The Tonight Show*, where she performed “California” on the dulcimer for Jimmy Fallon, showcasing her musical talent.

Adding another layer to the story, filmmaker Cameron Crowe is reportedly developing a separate Joni Mitchell biopic.

This new project is said to star Meryl Streep, who played Seyfried's mother in the *Mamma Mia!* films.

Seyfried noted that there has been some confusion and reaction regarding Crowe's project, with people questioning his approach.

She speculated that Crowe's version might depict Mitchell at different stages of her life, from a young age to older.

Given Seyfried's demonstrated commitment and musical ability, some suggest she could still be considered for the role of a younger Mitchell in Crowe's film.
