Director Clare Kilner has shed light on the emotional complexities behind Rhaenyra's decision to execute Otto Hightower, emphasizing the character's internal conflict during this pivotal moment.

Kilner explained her intention to immerse the audience in Rhaenyra's perspective as she performs her first execution.

"I wanted to try and express to the audience what it feels like to be handed a sword and to chop off someone’s head like that," Kilner stated.

This directorial choice aimed to extend the moment and allow viewers to deeply consider the emotional toll such an act would take, especially for a character like Rhaenyra, who has known Otto Hightower her entire life.

The scene depicts Rhaenyra as visibly distressed, tearful, and jittery while beheading Otto Hightower, who is the grandfather of her half-brother, King Aegon Targaryen.

This act of vengeance follows the death of her son at the Battle Of The Gullet.

Despite her husband Daemon's encouragement for a swift execution to solidify her authority, Kilner chose to linger on Rhaenyra's struggle, showcasing her conflicting emotions rather than a display of unhesitating power.

This approach highlights the personal cost of leadership and the difficult choices Rhaenyra must make to establish her reign, offering a nuanced portrayal of a queen grappling with the demands of her new role.
