Taylor Sheridan, the co-creator of the popular neo-Western drama "Yellowstone," recently voiced his strong opinions on critics and studio executives during an interview on The Bill Simmons Podcast.

Sheridan made it clear that he does not aim to please critics with his storytelling choices for "Yellowstone" or its various spin-offs.

This stance offers insight into the creative philosophy behind one of television's most successful franchises.

Sheridan cited an example from his Paramount+ series "Landman," where he deliberately kept actress Demi Moore largely in the background for the first season.

He anticipated that critics would view this as underutilization, stating, "The critics are going to come after me: ‘I’m underutilizing [Moore], can’t write for women’—all this nonsense." He then outlined a future plot point where Moore's character would take over an oil company after her husband's death, suggesting a long-term narrative strategy.

“The critics and me… I don’t care what they think and it annoys the s--t out of them that I don’t care,” Sheridan remarked, adding that he sometimes intentionally "rage-baits" them.

He asserted his desire to "simply not do what everyone else was doing" when he began writing, which he described as avoiding shortcuts and adhering to fundamental storytelling rules.

Beyond critics, Sheridan also directed criticism towards studio and network executives.

He argued that these executives, often from marketing or legal backgrounds, lack a deep understanding of story development.

He lamented the current industry trend of "endless rewrites" and frequent meetings about "tone and mood," contrasting it with a past era where writers and directors had more autonomy.

Sheridan, who transitioned from acting to writing, believes that many in the industry take shortcuts and fail to properly advance plots.

He specifically mentioned Marvel, suggesting their films rely on "information dumps" rather than moving the story forward through action.

Sheridan recently moved from Paramount to a contract with NBC Universal, reportedly after declining to make his shows "overtly political."
