The independent horror film "Obsession" has achieved a significant box office milestone, crossing the $400 million mark in global ticket sales.

This success highlights the film's remarkable performance, especially considering its modest production budget.

After two months in theaters, "Obsession" has accumulated $403 million worldwide, with $245 million from domestic screenings and $157 million from international markets.

Directed by YouTuber Curry Barker, the film was made for just $750,000 and later acquired by Focus Features for $14 million at last year's Toronto Film Festival.

This substantial return on investment makes "Obsession" a highly profitable venture for its distributors and producers.

Unlike many films that see a decline in viewership after several weeks, "Obsession" maintained its appeal, even drawing audiences over the July 4th holiday weekend with $5.3 million domestically and $12 million internationally.

The film is now approaching the $250 million mark in North America, a rare achievement for any film, particularly in the current post-pandemic cinematic landscape.

"Obsession" debuted in May with a promising $17 million in North America.

What followed was an unusual trend: ticket sales continued to climb, resulting in four consecutive weekends that outperformed its opening.

This sustained interest is largely attributed to positive word-of-mouth and strong engagement from Gen Z audiences.

The film, which follows a romantic named Bear (Michael Johnston) who makes a Faustian bargain, has resonated with younger viewers.

Its success, alongside A24's "Backrooms" (another horror film directed by YouTuber Kane Parsons, which has grossed $347 million worldwide), challenges the notion that younger generations are not interested in the big screen.

Jason Blum, who produced both "Obsession" and "Backrooms" through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, noted that these films indicate a "new growth area" in theatrical releases, driven by a specific taste for "left-of-center" horror movies among a new generation of moviegoers.
