Director Craig Gillespie has revealed that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn played a role in selecting the song for a pivotal slow-motion fight scene in the new *Supergirl* film.

The scene, which features Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) defending Ruthye (Eve Ridley) from Brigands, is set to a cover of Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" by Kelty Greye and KidMotel.

The choice of music for this final major action sequence has generated considerable discussion on social media since the film's release.

This development is significant as it highlights Gunn's direct involvement in creative decisions for the DCU's latest installment, even down to specific musical cues.

Speaking with *Rolling Stone*, Gillespie and screenwriter Ana Nogueira discussed the extensive process of finding the right track.

Nogueira noted, "It went ’round and ’round, didn’t it?

There were a lot of options." Gillespie added that the decision came down to the wire, stating, "That was probably the biggest discussion.

And it was down to the very last week, and I gotta give James credit for that one."

Despite the collaborative effort, the song choice has not been universally well-received by audiences.

Many fans have taken to social media to voice their opinions, with some questioning the suitability of the cover for the intense action sequence.

One fan commented, "I largely thought the movie was fine to pretty good most of the time but I just….

WHY did they use that version of the song?

Why didn’t they just do the normal one?"

Others suggested that a needle drop might not have been the best approach, with one user stating, "If you are considering 45 songs for a needle drop don't do a needle drop.

A good theme for her would have been better than any needle drop." However, not all reactions were negative, as some viewers found the song to be a perfect fit for the scene, arguing, "I’m sorry but that song was absolutely perfect.

Kara’s gonna be alright."

*Supergirl* premiered on June 26, 2026, and the debate surrounding this particular musical moment continues to be a prominent topic among viewers.
