Jesse Eisenberg Declined "The Social Reckoning" Role Due to Mark Zuckerberg Concerns
Jesse Eisenberg opted not to return as Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming film "The Social Reckoning," a decision confirmed by writer and director Aaron Sorkin.
Sorkin reportedly spent three days attempting to persuade Eisenberg to reprise the role he originated in "The Social Network," a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination.
Eisenberg's portrayal of Zuckerberg in David Fincher's 2010 film is one of his most recognized roles.
"The Social Reckoning" aims to explore the later impacts of the social media platform, years after its creation, but will do so without its original lead.
This development is significant as it means a foundational character from the original narrative will be portrayed by a new actor, potentially altering audience perception of the character's continuity.
Sorkin, who also penned "The Social Network," shared details of Eisenberg's decision during an interview with Vanity Fair.
He acknowledged that Eisenberg was his first choice for the part, stating, "I felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested."
While Sorkin clarified he couldn't speak for Eisenberg's exact feelings on Facebook, he indicated that the actor's reluctance stemmed from a desire to distance himself from the controversial tech figure.
"He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy," Sorkin explained.
He further elaborated that Eisenberg disliked being approached by fans with business cards referencing an iconic line from the first film.
In October 2025, Eisenberg himself addressed his decision to pass on the project, telling Today that he felt he had "outgrown" the part.
He emphasized that his reasons were unrelated to the quality of the new film, stating, "When you play a character, you feel, at some point, maybe you've outgrown it, but it's a really wonderful movie."
The role of an older Mark Zuckerberg will now be filled by "Succession" actor Jeremy Strong.
According to Vanity Fair, Sorkin first offered Eisenberg the script at a 2025 Oscar Party, where he also encountered Strong, who expressed interest in the role should Eisenberg decline.
"The Social Reckoning" is set to premiere on October 9, 2026.
