Disney's live-action remake of "Moana" has reportedly underperformed at the box office during its opening weekend, bringing in $43 million domestically and $52 million worldwide.

This performance falls short of Disney's revised domestic projection of $60 million, which itself was a reduction from an initial $75 million forecast.

The film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia, debuted on July 9.

Its domestic opening weekend gross is notably close to that of last year's "Snow White" remake, which earned $42.2 million domestically and $45 million worldwide.

This comparison is significant as "Snow White" faced considerable controversy and negative press prior to its release, while "Moana" had less pre-release baggage and featured a major star.

Industry sources speaking to Deadline suggest that the "Moana" remake could lead to a loss of $100 million to $125 million for Disney.

This projection assumes the film reaches a global total of $250 million, which is not guaranteed.

The reported total budget for the film, including marketing, is nearly $395 million.

Several factors are being cited for the film's lukewarm reception.

Analysts and critics suggest that the remake may have been released too soon after the successful "Moana 2" last year, potentially diminishing audience demand.

Additionally, Disney faced internal competition during the opening weekend, with "Toy Story 5" earning an additional $45 million and reaching $880 million globally.

This competition, coupled with high ticket prices, may have led families to choose other cinematic options.

One source reportedly expressed surprise at Disney's decision to schedule the live-action "Moana" for a 2026 release, given the presence of "Moana 2" and "Toy Story 5" in their lineup.

Looking ahead, Disney reportedly does not have a new live-action project scheduled for 2027, with the next anticipated release being the live-action "Lilo and Stitch" sequel in 2028.
