The Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael," has officially become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, reaching $911.9 million at the global box office.

This significant achievement sees the film dethrone "Bohemian Rhapsody," which previously held the record.

Produced by Graham King, who also produced the Oscar-winning "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Michael" has garnered $358.6 million domestically and $553.3 million internationally.

Universal handled the majority of the international distribution, contributing $540.5 million from foreign theatrical and ancillary rights.

The film's success is particularly notable as it continues its theatrical run, with its recent release in Japan.

Industry observers suggest that the Japanese market could potentially push "Michael" to become the second film of 2026 to cross the $1 billion mark globally, following Universal's "Super Mario Galaxy Movie."

Lionsgate, in partnership with Kino for the Japan release, has also seen strong performance in other territories, including Russia, where the film collected $10 million.

The studio faced production challenges, including $50 million in reshoots due to a plot point concerning an accuser that was not intended to be dramatized in the John Logan-written screenplay.

Despite these hurdles, the film's box office performance has been a major win for Lionsgate's motion picture division.

"Michael" has broken several box office records beyond just being the highest-grossing musical biopic.

It stands as Lionsgate's highest-grossing theatrical release ever worldwide and secured the largest global opening weekend for a musical biopic.

The film also achieved the highest-grossing opening ever for a musical biopic in 65 international markets and surpassed the lifetime gross of "Bohemian Rhapsody" in 40 international markets, including Brazil, France, and Mexico.

Domestically, it is the highest-grossing music biopic and overall biopic, also boasting the largest domestic opening weekend for a musical biopic.
