Michelin Guide Elevates Two California Restaurants to Three-Star Status in 2026
The 2026 Michelin Guide has recognized two more California establishments with its highest honor, bringing the state's total number of three-star restaurants to 10.
This development means California now boasts more top-rated restaurants than the rest of America combined, underscoring its prominence in the fine dining landscape.
Among the newly elevated is Californios, which has made history as the first Mexican restaurant in the world to earn three Michelin stars.
Chef Val Cantú, a Texas native, opened Californios in San Francisco in 2015, quickly earning a star in its first year and a second a few years later.
The restaurant, which moved to a larger San Francisco location in 2020, offers a 10-course menu that has now achieved global recognition.
Also ascending to three-star status is Enclos, located in Sonoma.
This restaurant, led by Brian Limoges, achieved this prestigious rating remarkably quickly, reaching three stars roughly 18 months after its December 2025 opening.
Enclos, situated in an old Victorian home at Stone Edge Farm Vineyards and Winery, debuted with two stars in the 2025 guide for its contemporary Californian cuisine, which draws inspiration from local farm ingredients and Pacific seafood.
These additions join a distinguished list of California restaurants that have maintained their three-star ratings.
These include Addison in San Diego, led by chef William Bradley, which focuses on "California Gastronomy" with dishes like Thai coconut soup tom kha gai and Regiis Ova caviar.
Atelier Crenn in San Francisco, under chef Dominique Crenn, continues to offer an artistic take on modern French fare, with Crenn being the first woman to run a Michelin three-star restaurant in America.
Benu in San Francisco, helmed by Corey Lee, merges Asian flavors, while The French Laundry in Yountville, under Thomas Keller, remains a leader in American fine dining.
Other enduring three-star establishments are Providence in Los Angeles, known for its seafood-focused menu and sustainability efforts; Quince in San Francisco, where chef Michael Tusk blends Northern Italian cuisine with Northern California ingredients; SingleThread in Healdsburg, an immersive dining experience by Kyle and Katina Connaughton; and Somni in West Hollywood, led by Aitor Zabala, which combines Spanish modernism with Los Angeles influences.
