Princess Lilibet to Observe Royal Curtsy Protocol at Age Five

Princess Lilibet, the daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, has reached the age where royal protocol dictates she must begin curtsying to the monarch.

Now five years old, Lilibet would be expected to curtsy to her grandfather, King Charles III, and Queen Camilla, should she be in their physical presence.

This development is significant as it highlights a traditional aspect of royal life that Princess Lilibet, due to her family's relocation, has not been regularly exposed to.

This rule applies to all royal children upon turning five.

Had Prince Harry and Meghan Markle not stepped back from their royal duties and moved to the U.S., Princess Lilibet would likely have already been undergoing formal royal etiquette training.

Etiquette expert Myka Meier previously noted in 2018 that royal children are raised with formal meals and events, practicing appropriate voice levels and dressing.

The expectation to curtsy is a long-standing tradition within the British Royal Family.

Even Prince George, Lilibet's cousin, has reportedly needed reminders regarding royal protocol, as seen when Princess Charlotte nudged him to bow during Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

This suggests that even those raised within the royal system can occasionally forget the strictures of etiquette.

## Meghan Markle's Past Experience with Royal Protocol

The irony of Princess Lilibet now being subject to this rule is likely not lost on her mother, Meghan Markle.

The Duchess of Sussex admitted in the couple's Netflix docuseries "Harry and Meghan" that she initially thought Prince Harry was joking when he first explained the need to curtsy to Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince Harry himself acknowledged the awkwardness of explaining such a tradition, particularly to someone from an American background.

Prince Harry has stated that a primary reason for relocating to the United States was to ensure his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, could have a happier childhood.

He confirmed in 2024 that his children are thriving in the States, noting their sense of humor and how they keep him and Meghan grounded.

While their upbringing differs significantly from other royal children, the protocol regarding curtsying remains a part of their royal lineage.
