At the Cannes Lions conference, Priyanka Chopra Jonas discussed the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, highlighting how traditional barriers for talent and filmmakers are diminishing.

She pointed to the success of the low-budget horror film “Obsession” as a prime example, suggesting that a strong idea can now find an audience through platforms like YouTube.

This development is significant as it indicates a shift towards a more accessible and merit-based industry, where content creators can bypass conventional gatekeepers.

Chopra Jonas, a prominent figure in Bollywood who has spent the last decade building her career in Hollywood, reflected on her early experiences.

She noted that without industry connections—her parents being doctors—navigating the film world was challenging.

She also recalled being told that Indian cinema could never achieve the global reach of Hollywood due to language differences.

To counter these historical limitations, Chopra Jonas established her own production house.

Her goal is to support new filmmakers and those with compelling ideas who might lack the access she can provide.

She emphasized that "ideas are your currency" in today's entertainment climate.

Looking ahead, Chopra Jonas expressed her ambition to elevate her English-language career.

While she has worked with top filmmakers and actors in Hindi cinema, exploring diverse genres and roles, she feels her Hollywood work has not yet offered the same breadth.

Her "next reinvention" involves bringing a similar variety to her characters in English-language projects.

She attributed the increased global consumption of diverse content to streaming services and the pandemic, which encouraged audiences to explore international productions.

Chopra Jonas cited examples like Korean dramas, Iranian movies, and the global phenomena of "Squid Game" and "Parasite" as proof that non-English-language entertainment is no longer a niche market.

She also mentioned her current project, "Varanasi," which was shot in Telugu and is slated for dubbing into nearly 200 languages, further demonstrating this global shift.

Beyond her professional aspirations, Chopra Jonas also shared insights into her personal life since marriage and motherhood.

She acknowledged that her priorities have shifted dramatically, leading her to be more selective about her projects and time commitments.

She now approaches her career with a renewed respect for working mothers, including her own.
