Russell Crowe, the Oscar-winning star of the epic film *Gladiator*, has offered his perspective on why he believes the upcoming sequel, *Gladiator II*, will ultimately "fail." Speaking at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, Crowe contended that the follow-up lacks the moral core that was central to the success of Ridley Scott's 2000 blockbuster.

Crowe's comments provide insight into the creative decisions behind the original film and highlight his view on what made it resonate with audiences.

He reflected on his own behind-the-scenes battles during the production of *Gladiator*, specifically his resistance to including a romantic subplot between his character, Maximus, and Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen.

"The studio, the producers [thought] there should be sex between Maximus and the female characters.

I kept pushing back," Crowe stated.

He emphasized that Maximus's journey was driven by avenging his wife and child, and a romantic entanglement would have undermined this core motivation.

"It doesn’t make any sense because that destroys the journey," he added.

The Academy Award winner noted that he "stuck to his guns," and director Ridley Scott eventually agreed that Maximus's unwavering devotion to his murdered family was the emotional heart of the movie.

According to Crowe, this essential element is precisely what the sequel is missing.

"For them, in a second movie to destroy that moral center… they failed," Crowe asserted.

"They failed because they didn’t understand why [the original movie] was successful—it had a moral core."

Crowe was not always against the idea of a sequel.

In 2024, he mentioned on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he had previously hired Nick Cave to develop a follow-up concept centered on Maximus in limbo after his death, though that project never materialized.

The actor also shared his belief that the original *Gladiator*'s appeal extended beyond its perceived target audience.

He argued, "You think that on the surface *Gladiator* is a movie for men, but if it was a movie for men, it would be about revenge, but it’s not about revenge.

It is a movie for women because it is about vengeance."

While the sequel's box-office performance, with a reported $462 million worldwide gross, was nearly identical to the original's $465 million, it was produced with a significantly larger budget and received weaker critical reviews.

Crowe was in Taormina to accept the festival’s International Achievement Award and to premiere his new thriller, *Bear Country*.

He also briefly mentioned wrapping filming on the upcoming *Highlander* reboot, starring Henry Cavill, which he described as "fantastic."
