Ryan Murphy's 'The Shards' Adaptation to Premiere in August on FX and Hulu
Ryan Murphy's highly anticipated adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's autofiction thriller novel, "The Shards," is scheduled to premiere on FX and Hulu on August 5.
The series will debut at 6 p.m.
PT, bringing the dark, coming-of-age story to screens this summer.
Set in 1980s Los Angeles, "The Shards" centers on Bret, an aspiring writer portrayed by Igby Rigney.
His high school experience begins to unravel with the arrival of a new student, Robert Mallory (Homer Gere), which coincides with the escalating terror of a serial killer known as the Trawler, who targets teenagers across the Valley.
As Bret's imagination spirals, his relationships with his girlfriend Debbie (Hayes Warner) and friends Susan Reynolds (Kaia Gerber) and Thom Wright (Graham Campbell) are also affected.
The group navigates their senior year amidst the backdrop of L.A.'s private school culture, characterized by wealth and drug-fueled excess.
Their youth is further complicated by the transgressions of adults in their lives, including Terry Schaffer (Wes Bentley), Liz Schaffer (Evan Rachel Wood), and Steven Reinhardt (Jordan Roth).
This project marks another significant venture for super-producer Ryan Murphy, known for his extensive output in television.
The series is executive produced by a team including Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Ellis himself, and Eric Kovtun, among others.
"The Shards" is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.
Prior to Murphy's involvement, an adaptation of the book was in development at HBO with "Challengers" director Luca Guadagnino attached.
Murphy took over the project in 2025 and brought on director Max Winkler.
