Walton Goggins Hailed as Hero for Saving Olivia Wilde from Horse Stampede on 'Cowboys & Aliens' Set
Olivia Wilde recently shared a harrowing experience from the set of the 2011 film "Cowboys & Aliens," revealing that actor Walton Goggins saved her life during a dangerous horse accident.
Wilde detailed the incident on the "Armchair Expert" podcast, explaining that she was nearly trampled by horses during a filming sequence.
The scene involved Wilde, Daniel Craig, and Harrison Ford galloping at full speed across a desert landscape, with approximately 40 horses following behind them.
During this take, Wilde's horse unexpectedly bucked after jumping over a large ditch, causing her to fall.
She landed on the ground, hitting her head and back.
Critically, Wilde fell on the far side of a dirt lip, making her invisible to the horses behind her, compounded by a significant amount of dust.
She recalled hearing the thundering sound of the approaching horses and believing she was about to be severely injured or killed.
It was at this moment that Walton Goggins, who was riding ahead, noticed Wilde's predicament.
In a split second decision, Goggins turned his horse sideways directly in front of her, allowing the other horses to collide with his mount instead of Wilde.
Goggins, described by Wilde as a skilled rider, was able to manage the impact.
Other cast and crew members reportedly thought Goggins had lost control, but he was intentionally protecting Wilde on the ground.
Wilde expressed profound gratitude, stating, "I owe him my life.
It's crazy.
He's a real-life hero." This revelation highlights the unexpected dangers faced by actors during production and the quick thinking that can avert tragedy.
"Cowboys & Aliens," directed by Jon Favreau, was based on a graphic novel and featured a star-studded cast including Sam Rockwell and Paul Dano alongside the main trio.
Despite a production budget in the $160 million range, the film was a box office disappointment, grossing $175 million worldwide.
However, reviews were generally positive, with Variety praising it as "a full-bodied, roundly satisfying yarn."
