Actor Danny Glover recently disclosed his diagnosis with Alzheimer's, a condition he learned about in 2022.

This revelation offers insight into the personal challenges faced by public figures dealing with neurodegenerative diseases.

His daughter, Mandisa Glover, shared with PEOPLE that she observed the initial signs of her father's condition around the same year he received the Oscars' Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Mandisa noted a significant shift in her father's renowned storytelling ability, a trait she had always admired.

"The history of my dad is that he remembers every single thing back to 1970, what corner he was standing on, who he spoke to, what they spoke about, what color they were wearing, everything," Mandisa explained.

She recalled that during this period, "pieces were missing" from his usual detailed accounts of his parents, prompting her to wonder about the changes.

## Living with Alzheimer's

Danny Glover, known for roles in films like *Lethal Weapon* and *The Color Purple*, has admitted that he is "still not accepting in my mind all parts of" the diagnosis.

He acknowledges moments of clarity, particularly in the mornings, stating, "When I wake up, I try to figure out something.

Mandisa described her father's current state as having moments where "he’s aware sometimes and then sometimes not." This fluctuating awareness is a common aspect of Alzheimer's, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, is the leading cause of dementia, characterized by the buildup of proteins in the brain leading to cell death and shrinkage.

## Family Support

Glover's younger brother, Marty, resides with him in his San Francisco townhouse and provides care.

Marty, who has witnessed his brother's career from its early days, expressed the emotional toll of seeing the deterioration caused by the disease.

"You see the deterioration, and you think, 'Wow,'" Marty shared, adding, "Sometimes you get emotional about it.

It's tough, because you don't want to see nobody go through this."

Marty also spoke of Danny Glover's profound impact on his own life, crediting his brother with saving him from past struggles.
