Elmo, the well-known red monster from "Sesame Street," recently found himself at the center of a social media debate following a post about the 2026 NBA Finals.

The character's initial message, shared on both X and Instagram, wished both the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs well in their upcoming game at the Frost Bank Center in Texas.

This seemingly innocuous post, which included the line, "Elmo hopes both teams have fun!", quickly garnered attention.

The post also featured a video of Elmo making a basket and celebrating with his friend Abby Cadabby.

However, the neutral tone of Elmo's message did not sit well with some fans, particularly those supporting the New York Knicks.

Critics pointed out that the fictional setting of Sesame Street is located in New York City, suggesting that Elmo should naturally align with the Knicks.

This sentiment was echoed by various social media users.

One X user commented, "This isn't the time for sportsmanship Elmo.

These streets ain't sesame." Another user shared an older photo of Grover, another "Sesame Street" character, with former Knicks players Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, implying Grover's loyalty to the team.

Even the official Wendy's account joined the conversation, posting, "NOT NOW ELMO" in response to the original message.

The backlash prompted Elmo to issue a follow-up statement.

On Thursday, Elmo posted, "KNICKS that last message!

Elmo didn't mean to SPUR you on!" This development matters to audiences because it highlights how even beloved children's characters can become subjects of online sports rivalries, reflecting the passionate nature of fan bases.

The NBA Finals games are scheduled to air live on ABC and will be available for streaming on the ESPN App.

Game 2 between the Knicks and Spurs is set to begin at 8:30 p.m.

ET on Friday night.
