The latest installment in the Netflix franchise, "Enola Holmes 3," sees Millie Bobby Brown return as the titular young detective, but the film is reportedly experiencing some growing pains.

The third film in the series, which imagines another gifted detective in the Holmes family, has been noted for a shift in tone and execution.

Brown, known for her role in "Stranger Things," has consistently been praised for her portrayal of Enola Holmes, a character based on Nancy Springer’s YA book series "The Enola Holmes Mysteries." However, the new film, directed by Philip Barantini, who takes over from Harry Bradbeer, introduces a more "grown-up touch" to Enola's maturation.

This change, while understandable, reportedly doesn't quite align with the material's usual exuberance.

Barantini, reuniting with "Adolescence" co-creator Jack Thorne, who has scripted all three films, attempts to navigate darker subject matter.

The "Enola Holmes" films have previously explored themes like government conspiracies, women’s rights, and class systems.

"Enola Holmes 3" delves into war crimes and genocide, but the review suggests a surprising lack of verve makes these serious topics feel out of step with the series' established energy.

The film opens with Enola and Lord Tewkesbury’s (Louis Partridge) wedding, a scene partially shot on location in Malta.

This setting provides a visually stunning backdrop, moving the mystery outside of London.

However, the plot quickly shifts as Enola's brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill), is reportedly kidnapped, leading to the cancellation of the wedding.

As Enola juggles her investigations with Tewkesbury's emotional state, the narrative is described as feeling oddly flat despite Thorne's script layering on drama, including the kidnapping of Tewkesbury's mother, a hotel fire, and the involvement of Maltese freedom fighters.

The mystery itself is deemed complicated but lacking in genuine unraveling, with deductions often presented as bald observations rather than the result of Enola's sharp intellect.

This installment is criticized for being too elementary, suggesting a departure from the engaging and instructive qualities that defined the first film.

"Enola Holmes 3" began streaming on Netflix on Wednesday, July 1.
