First Trailer for 'The Social Reckoning' Reveals Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg
The initial trailer for "The Social Reckoning," the much-anticipated sequel to the 2010 film "The Social Network," has officially debuted, immediately sparking widespread discussion online.
This development is significant as the original film profoundly influenced public perception of Facebook and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg.
Aaron Sorkin, who earned an Oscar for writing the screenplay for the original movie, returns to pen the script for "The Social Reckoning." This time, Sorkin is also taking on directing duties, a change from the first film which was directed by David Fincher.
The sequel will also feature a new musical score, as Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who composed for the original, are not returning.
"Succession" star Jeremy Strong is set to play an older Mark Zuckerberg, taking over the role from Jesse Eisenberg.
Strong's portrayal, as seen in the trailer, includes a hair color change and an impression of Zuckerberg's voice.
A line from the trailer features Strong's Zuckerberg stating, "People around here understand that when I say ‘no,’ that’s the end of the debate.
I’m not two years out of a dorm room anymore, Charlie, look around!" The film is set years after the events of the first movie, depicting Facebook as a global company rather than a college startup.
"The Social Reckoning" draws its narrative from "The Facebook Files," a Wall Street Journal series based on leaked documents provided by whistleblower Frances Haugen.
Mikey Madison from "Anora" plays Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White of "The Bear" portrays Wall Street Journal technology reporter Jeff Horwitz.
Online reactions to the trailer have been varied.
Some viewers expressed skepticism, with one X user commenting, "Some films should be protected landmarks you’re not allowed to make sequels to." Another user on X noted, "Social Network sequel with no Fincher or Eisenberg and directed by Sorkin sounded awful in the first place but that trailer is somehow worse than I imagined." However, not all feedback was negative; film critic Jeff Zhang shared a screenshot of Jeremy Strong in the trailer, remarking, "lmao they kinda nailed that shit." Pop-culture writer Hunter Harris highlighted a specific line from the trailer, "‘she’s disrupting’ lmaoooo," referring to White’s character discussing Madison’s Haugen.
"The Social Reckoning" is scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States on October 9, 2026.
