The initial trailer for Taika Waititi’s dystopian sci-fi film, “Klara and the Sun,” has been unveiled, offering a first look at the adaptation starring Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams, and Natasha Lyonne.

This release provides the first glimpse into how the acclaimed novel will translate to the screen, a development that matters to fans of the book and those interested in the growing trend of literary adaptations.

The film is based on Kazuo Ishiguro's New York Times bestseller of the same name.

It centers on Klara, portrayed by Ortega, a robot specifically designed to combat loneliness.

The narrative follows a mother, played by Adams, who purchases Klara for her daughter, Josie (Mia Tharia), who is afflicted with a mysterious illness.

Rounding out the cast are Aran Murphy, son of “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy, and veteran actor Steve Buscemi.

Kazuo Ishiguro, the author of the source material, is also involved in the project as an executive producer.

Sony’s 3000 Pictures secured the screen rights to Ishiguro’s novel in July 2020, with Dahvi Waller announced as the screenwriter in March 2021.

David Heyman, Garrett Basch, and Taika Waititi served as producers for the film, with Elizabeth Gabler and Aislinn Dunster overseeing the project for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.

The novel, set in a near-future United States, is narrated from the perspective of Klara, an Artificial Friend powered by solar energy.

This isn't Ishiguro's first work to be adapted; his novel “Never Let Me Go” was made into a film in 2010, featuring Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, Keira Knightley, and Ella Purnell.

Jenna Ortega's recent filmography includes the A24 dark comedy “Death of a Unicorn” alongside Paul Rudd, The Weeknd’s “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” and the Sundance premiere “The Gallerist” with Natalie Portman.

Her popular Netflix series “Wednesday” saw its second season premiere last year, with a third season currently in development.

“Klara and the Sun” is slated for a theatrical release on October 23.
