Hugh Laurie, the acclaimed actor best known for his role as Dr.

Gregory House, recently engaged with a social media critic who described the popular medical drama *House* as formulaic.

This interaction offers a glimpse into how creators sometimes react to public commentary on their work.

The exchange began when freelance journalist Janet Murray posted a viral tweet outlining what she perceived as the repetitive structure of *House* episodes.

Murray's critique suggested a pattern where "Patient has mysterious illness.

Hugh Laurie (House) gets diagnosis wrong.

Patient nearly dies," followed by a repeat of the misdiagnosis and near-death, before concluding with "Hugh Laurie has last minute leftfield idea.

Gets diagnosis right.

Doesn’t get fired." She ended her tweet with a rhetorical "Eight seasons of this?"

Laurie, who was nominated for an Emmy six times for his portrayal of Dr.

Gregory House, directly responded to Murray's comments.

Adopting a tone reminiscent of his on-screen character, he thanked her for the critique and offered a humorous explanation for the show's structure.

He stated that attempts at episodes where House got the diagnosis right immediately were too short for NBC, and episodes where the patient died were unpopular with audiences.

Expanding on his defense, Laurie compared the show's thematic variations to those found in other art forms, such as JS Bach's Goldberg Variations, Frida Kahlo's self-portraits, and Henry Moore's sculptures.

He suggested that if a viewer only saw "hospital, medical blah blah," then the show might not have been intended for them.

Laurie concluded his response with a pointed remark, telling Murray, "Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!"

*House* aired for eight seasons on Fox from 2004 to 2012.

Despite receiving four Emmy nominations for outstanding drama series, it never won the award.

Laurie himself, despite multiple nominations, also never secured an Emmy win for his role.
