Kane Parsons, the director behind the A24 film "Backrooms," has openly shared his concerns regarding the increasing presence of generative AI in Hollywood.

At just 20 years old, Parsons made his directorial debut with A24, and he views the rise of AI with significant apprehension.

Parsons recently told The Australian that he believes generative AI is already leading to "genuinely harmful consequences." He expressed a strong personal disinclination towards using AI in his creative process, stating, "If I could snap my fingers and make generative AI disappear forever, I probably would.

Creatively, I get no enjoyment from using those tools.

It defeats the purpose entirely for me."

While acknowledging that AI could potentially assist with more mundane VFX tasks, Parsons finds it challenging to discuss the technology objectively due to the high stakes and the negative impacts already emerging.

This perspective from a young, successful director highlights a growing debate within the entertainment industry about the role and ethics of artificial intelligence.

Despite his reservations about using AI for creation, Parsons is intrigued by the idea of exploring AI as a subject within his art.

He noted that AI-generated content is becoming a visible part of daily life, describing it as "obvious AI slop" that has become part of our visual reality.

Parsons views generative AI less as an innovation and more as a "symptom of a broader cultural and economic rot."

He intends to incorporate this "iconography" into his future projects, not by using AI to create the art itself, but by examining what it represents.

Parsons emphasized his interest in using art to interrogate the implications of AI.

For his film "Backrooms," Parsons and his VFX team utilized Blender, a free CGI tool he learned on a "fairly crummy laptop" in middle school, demonstrating his commitment to traditional, hands-on creative methods.
