Actor Patrick Dempsey has officially ruled out a run for Congress, putting an end to speculation that he might replace Graham Platner.

The Maine native, known for his role in *Grey's Anatomy*, confirmed his decision in an op-ed published in the *Portland Press Herald*.

Dempsey, 60, stated that he had given serious consideration to the idea after being approached multiple times following Platner's recent scandal.

However, after much reflection, he concluded that his current endeavors, particularly the Dempsey Center for cancer care, allow him to contribute more effectively to his home state.

In his op-ed, Dempsey wrote, "As I reflected on all of this, I kept coming back to one question: Do I truly want to serve in Congress?

After a lot of thought, I realized the answer is no.

Not because public service isn't honorable—it absolutely is.

But because I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I've already built." This decision clarifies his political intentions, allowing him to continue focusing on his established philanthropic efforts.

Meanwhile, Maine Democrats are preparing to hold a nominating convention before July 27 to select a candidate.

Potential candidates may be required to gather a minimum number of signatures.

Former gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson has already announced his intention to run for the position.
