Rapper Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years for Third-Degree Rape
Grammy-nominated rapper Mystikal, known for his work with Master P's No Limit Records, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for third-degree rape.
The sentencing follows his arrest in the summer of 2022, where he was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail in Louisiana.
Michael Tyler, as Mystikal is formally known, faced charges including first-degree rape, simple robbery, domestic abuse battery–strangulation, false imprisonment, and simple criminal damage to property.
The victim identified Tyler as the suspect from the hospital where she was receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
According to Baton Rouge-based ABC affiliate WBRZ, the victim testified in a Louisiana courtroom that Tyler allegedly punched and choked her, pulled out her braids, and forcibly raped her.
She requested the maximum sentence for the rapper.
Tyler himself addressed the courtroom, stating, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” before receiving his 20-year sentence for third-degree rape.
This charge carries a maximum of 25 years with no possibility of early release or probation.
Tyler's legal proceedings saw him enter a guilty plea in March, which resulted in his first-degree rape charge being reduced to third-degree.
First-degree rape in Louisiana carries a potential sentence of life imprisonment.
Days before his sentencing, Tyler's attorney filed a motion to withdraw the guilty plea, but this motion was ultimately dismissed.
This is not Mystikal's first encounter with the legal system regarding sexual offenses.
He was previously convicted of sexual battery in 2003 after pleading guilty, serving six years in prison before his release in 2010.
Additionally, in 2017, he was indicted on rape and kidnapping charges stemming from 2016 allegations.
He spent 18 months in jail and was released on a $3-million bond in 2019, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Caddo Parish district attorney later dropped those charges in 2020 after a second grand jury declined to issue an indictment.
This latest sentencing marks a significant development in the rapper's ongoing legal history.
