Vince Gilligan's 'Pluribus' Features Ambitious Production Design and Star Rhea Seehorn
Vince Gilligan's latest series, *Pluribus*, has quickly become Apple TV+'s most-watched series, showcasing ambitious production and a unique premise.
The drama centers on Carol Sturka, portrayed by Rhea Seehorn, a misanthropic romance novelist who finds herself in extraordinary circumstances.
She is one of only 13 individuals globally who remain unaffected by an alien virus that has transformed the rest of the world's population into a Zen hivemind.
The series, which received a two-season, straight-to-series commitment from Apple after a competitive bidding war, highlights Gilligan's characteristic writing style, where he often navigates complex narrative corners.
This approach is evident in *Pluribus*, where the creative team, including many long-time collaborators from *Breaking Bad* and *Better Call Saul*, thrives under pressure.
One of the most notable examples of the show's ambitious production is the second episode, titled "Pirate Lady." Gilligan described it as the "single biggest directing job" he has ever undertaken, comparing it to a movie in terms of schedule and budget.
The episode's filming locations spanned Albuquerque, the Canary Islands, and northern Spain, underscoring its large scale.
A significant set piece in "Pirate Lady" involved the construction of a custom Air Force One.
While producers initially explored renting a real 747, building one from scratch proved more economical.
Production designer Denise Pizzini, who also worked on *Better Call Saul*, led her team in engineering, stamping, welding, and painting a section of the exterior hull to replicate the presidential plane.
They also created a small interior section behind the door, with the larger interior built on a separate set.
Pizzini opted for a richer color palette of blues and dark woods, departing from the typically bland tan leather seen in real Air Force One interiors, to suit Gilligan's preference for reflective surfaces.
Costume designer Jennifer L.
Bryan, another *Breaking Bad* and *Better Call Saul* alumna, designed Carol's attire for an onboard meeting, aiming for an approachable yet authoritative look.
The episode also introduces Karolina Wydra as Zosia, a character who embodies the collective consciousness of humanity and serves as an ambassador to Carol.
Wydra's portrayal required extensive research into high-intelligence humans to convey Zosia's lawyerly and precise communication style.
Gilligan, known for his meticulous planning, is currently breaking the second season of *Pluribus*.
His detailed outlines often include precise instructions for the crew long before filming begins, ensuring that even minor elements are accounted for.
This commitment to thorough preparation allows Gilligan and his team to deliver a polished product, reflecting his mantra: "Measure twice, cut once."
