Wanda Sykes Details Bill Maher's Confrontation Over Golden Globes Joke
Comedian Wanda Sykes recently shared details of a post-Golden Globes encounter with Bill Maher, who reportedly confronted her about a joke she made during the awards ceremony.
Sykes recounted the interaction on Vulture’s “Good One” podcast, explaining that Maher approached her in a parking lot, asking, “What was that about?”
The joke in question occurred at the 83rd Golden Globes on January 11, while Sykes was presenting the award for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
Addressing Maher directly from the podium, Sykes quipped, “Bill Maher, you give us so much.
But I would love a little less.
Just, try less.” This public jab led to a private confrontation, highlighting the ongoing dynamic between the two comedians.
According to Sykes, Maher continued to press her about the joke, claiming it wasn't even funny.
Sykes responded by stating it was indeed a joke, evidenced by audience laughter.
She further explained that Maher’s persistent questioning only reinforced the point of her original joke, telling him, “See?
You’re doing exactly what we said in the joke.
We need less of this.
Do this less.
This is exactly, you’re epitomizing the joke — less of this!”
Maher reportedly argued that many of his friends and colleagues considered it a “stupid joke.” Sykes, in turn, retorted that she had received numerous texts praising the joke and expressing similar sentiments about Maher.
She humorously attributed their differing perspectives to their news consumption, stating, “You’re watching Fox News, and I’m over here on MSNBC, see?” The conversation concluded with Maher inviting Sykes onto his podcast, an invitation she declined.
Representatives for Maher did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
