Breckin Meyer Reflects on Brittany Murphy's Death and 'Toxic' Relationship
Breckin Meyer, known for his role alongside Brittany Murphy in the 1995 film *Clueless*, recently shared his thoughts on Murphy's untimely death and her relationship with her late husband, Simon Monjack.
In a resurfaced clip from a 2024 appearance on the *Still Here Hollywood Podcast*, Meyer characterized Monjack as a "toxic guy."
Murphy tragically passed away in December 2009 at the age of 32.
Her husband, British screenwriter and director Simon Monjack, died five months later at 40.
Both deaths occurred at their Hollywood mansion, which was previously owned by Britney Spears.
Meyer, who was at Ryan Phillippe's nearby home when Murphy died, recalled hearing the sirens heading towards what he later realized was Murphy's residence.
Reflecting on the period, Meyer stated, "It sucked.
It was really bad." He expressed that he wished he had been more surprised by her death, attributing his lack of surprise to Monjack's influence.
Meyer praised Murphy, calling her "one of the greatest people I know" and describing her as "a bottle of soda, she was the sun, she was so effervescent, and great." He lamented her passing, particularly in what he described as a "toxic relationship."
Meyer also noted that he knew Murphy "way before" their collaboration on *Clueless*, where he played Travis Birkenstock, the love interest of Murphy's character, Tai Frasier.
The Los Angeles County coroner previously determined Murphy's death was an "accident caused by a combination of pneumonia, an iron deficiency and multiple drug intoxication." The circumstances surrounding her death have been extensively examined, including in the HBO Max documentary *What Happened, Brittany Murphy?*, which explored her rise to fame, self-esteem issues, and puzzling death.
This resurfaced commentary from Meyer offers a new perspective from a close colleague on the personal struggles that may have surrounded the actress's final years.
