Tim Allen, known for his role in "Toy Story 5" and the classic sitcom "Home Improvement," has shed light on the difficulties surrounding a potential reboot of the beloved ABC series.

Allen indicated that the project is currently "stuck" due to "personality problems" among the actors who played his on-screen sons.

"They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys," Allen told US Weekly in an interview published Wednesday.

This development is significant for fans hoping to see a return of the popular show, as it directly impacts the feasibility of bringing back key characters.

"Home Improvement" aired for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999, starring Allen as Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor.

The series followed Tim's life as a home improvement TV personality and his family dynamics with his wife, Jill (Patricia Richardson), and their three sons: Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and Mark (Taran Noah Smith).

Challenges for a potential reboot appear to stem from issues involving the actors who played the Taylor sons.

Zachery Ty Bryan, who was 9 when the show began and 17 at its conclusion, has faced multiple legal troubles.

His arrests include a second-degree domestic violence charge in 2025 and a felony assault charge in Oregon in February 2021, following an alleged strangulation incident in 2020.

Another hurdle is Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played Randy.

According to a 2024 podcast interview with Patricia Richardson, Thomas is reportedly no longer interested in acting.

He has not had an on-screen role since a guest appearance on Allen's sitcom "Last Man Standing" in 2015.

Taran Noah Smith, who played the youngest son Mark, has not had an acting credit since a voice role in "Batman Beyond" in 1999.

Allen acknowledged these issues, stating, "They've got their own issues." He added, "I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them.

That's a little challenging right now, to put it mildly."
