Less than a year after employees at Casa Bonita, the Colorado Mexican restaurant owned by "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, initiated a strike, Actors’ Equity president Brooke Shields alleges that significant issues remain unresolved.

This development is important because it highlights ongoing labor disputes at a high-profile establishment, despite its celebrity ownership and recent revitalization efforts.

Shields claims that complaints regarding workplace safety, particularly for the restaurant’s renowned cliff divers, are still prevalent.

These divers, a key attraction featured in a "South Park" episode, reportedly face hazards such as concussions, hypothermia, and chlorine toxicity.

Beyond safety, workers are also seeking pay parity with servers.

The staff unionized under Actors’ Equity in April 2024.

According to CNN, 14 bargaining sessions have taken place, none of which were attended by owners Stone and Parker.

Shields expressed frustration, stating, "It’s just been silence, radio silence," regarding the owners' involvement.

She also noted that union concessions have resulted in a pay raise of less than a dollar an hour, with divers currently earning $10 less per hour than waiters.

Actors’ Equity has filed seven labor complaints with the National Labor Relations Board over the past year.

Shields voiced her concern, saying, “It’s just so disheartening because they’re putting their lives at risk, and they’re not being looked after.” Bethel Lindsley, the head of the restaurant’s dive team, emphasized the need for any safety measures for the divers, stating that currently there are none.

Casa Bonita gained national recognition following a 2003 "South Park" episode.

Stone and Parker acquired the restaurant's final location in 2021, rescuing it from bankruptcy and investing $30 million in its restoration.

Their efforts were documented in the acclaimed film "¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!"
