Composer Daniel Pemberton has revealed details about his collaboration with Queen co-founder and guitarist Brian May on the theme song for the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” film.

The partnership came about serendipitously when Pemberton, who sought to create Queen and ABBA-inspired music for the project, encountered May at Abbey Road Studios.

May, who was working on a newly mastered version of “Queen II,” expressed enthusiasm for the project after hearing about it from Pemberton.

This collaboration is significant as it brings together a renowned film composer with a legendary rock musician, potentially shaping the sonic identity of a major franchise revival.

During the recording sessions, May famously used his Red Special Guitar, an instrument he built as a teenager and has been central to Queen’s live performances.

Pemberton likened the guitar to the “Sword of Power” from the “Masters of the Universe” lore, noting its unique origin and powerful impact.

The resulting theme song, titled “Electrica,” is a three-minute ballad designed to evoke a sense of fun and grandeur.

It features a substantial musical arrangement, including a 100-piece choir, an 80-piece orchestra, a rock band, and various synthesizers.

Pemberton aimed for a sound that combines the weight of a hard-rock track with the campiness of a pop song, reflecting the film’s intention to be “unashamedly fun.”

Director Travis Knight’s vision for the film, based on the 1982 toyline, maintains the original’s silly, 80s tone.

The story follows He-Man, played by Nicholas Galitzine, as he transforms from a young boy named Adam to the powerful hero tasked with saving Eternia from Skeletor, portrayed by Jared Leto.

Pemberton also addressed the original “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” animated show’s theme.

While he teased its potential appearance towards the end of the film, he explained that incorporating the original music into the new theme proved challenging for the film’s action sequences.

He noted that the original theme, while iconic, was designed for short cartoon openings rather than sustained cinematic use.

For the entire 140-minute film, which includes 35 tracks, Pemberton adopted a “maximalist” approach, infusing the score with a rock and pop sensibility.

He emphasized that despite the inherent ridiculousness of the “Masters of the Universe” concept, the film and its music are incredibly sincere and flamboyant, aiming to be theatrical and over-the-top without irony.
