Eve Hewson Details Steven Spielberg's Unique Directing Style on Set
Actress Eve Hewson recently shared details about her experiences working with acclaimed director Steven Spielberg, highlighting his distinctive methods for drawing out performances.
Hewson recalled a particularly high-pressure moment during the filming of her upcoming movie, *Disclosure Day*, where she had to perform a significant scene opposite Colin Firth.
Adding to her nerves, the set was visited by former President Barack Obama, along with a host of other notable figures including Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, and Josh O’Connor.
Hewson recounted, “So not only is Barack Obama showing up, but the entire rest of the cast who isn’t in the scene is coming to meet him.
So I had to do the whole thing in front of [the former president] and Steven Spielberg, plus Emily Blunt and Colman Domingo and Josh O’Connor.” This scenario underscores the unique environment Hewson found herself in, performing under the watchful eyes of both a former head of state and a legendary director.
Hewson, whose father is Bono, has been exposed to prominent figures throughout her life.
She pursued acting after attending the New York Film Academy and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Her path led her to work with Spielberg previously on *Bridge of Spies*, where she had a small role.
For a scene requiring her to be startled, Spielberg stood just out of frame, banging two wooden bats together to elicit a genuine reaction.
Hewson found this practical approach incredibly helpful, noting, “It was so practical, and so helpful, and I’d never had a director be that attuned to what I needed.” This experience left a lasting impression, with Hewson sometimes asking other directors to use similar tactics.
Spielberg continued to follow Hewson's career, watching her performances in projects like *The Luminaries*, *Behind Her Eyes*, and *Bad Sisters*.
When news broke of his new UFO movie, Hewson took notice.
She later received a call from her agent, informing her that Spielberg wanted to Zoom with her, expressing pride in her work and offering her the role of Jane.
Hewson was surprised to find her character, Jane, featured prominently throughout the script, a role she initially assumed would be minor.
She advises fellow actors, “even if you think something is a small movie, Steven Spielberg is going to watch it one day and he might cast you, so make sure you show up.”
During their subsequent Zoom meeting, Hewson pitched ideas for the character and received the offer by the end of the week.
On the set of *Disclosure Day*, Spielberg's intuitive directing style was again evident.
Hewson described her character as the audience's surrogate, learning about a government plot to conceal alien life.
Spielberg would share stories to help Hewson access the necessary emotions, often mirroring her reactions.
She recalled, “If you cry, he’s standing at the monitor crying too.” This hands-on, empathetic approach to directing highlights Spielberg's commitment to his actors' performances.
Despite her starring role in a major Spielberg film, Hewson spent the *Disclosure Day* press tour in Dublin, filming *Isle of Man* with Channing Tatum and living with her parents.
She has observed the increased attention her role has brought, noting that the casting announcement alone helped her secure additional lead roles and that the trailer's release led to contact from people she hadn't spoken to in years.
Hewson expressed a mix of excitement and nervousness about the widespread audience for the film, stating, “I’m nervous that so many people are going to see this movie — every dentist I’ve ever been to, but also the entire world.”
