Jakob Nowell, the son of original Sublime singer Bradley Nowell, has revealed that the band's upcoming album, "Until the Sun Explodes," will likely be his final recording project with the group.

This development offers insight into the future direction of the reformed band, which has seen a resurgence in activity since Nowell joined.

Nowell, who teamed up with veteran Sublime members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh in 2023, shared his perspective with Billboard.

Despite the success of their collaboration, which has already produced chart-topping alt-rock singles like "Ensenada" and the album's title track, Nowell views this album as a one-off endeavor.

“Unless a child of mine wants to make another one one day, this is the last one I’m gonna make," Nowell stated.

He emphasized the importance of setting and achieving goals, noting that his time with Sublime has been a healing and growth experience.

However, he expressed a desire to "carry the flag forward in different ways now."

Nowell initially did not anticipate recording an album with the band.

He explained that the album organically came together through jam sessions during rehearsals and soundchecks, as the musicians are "very jam-oriented." These sessions led to the development of new songs, making it a natural progression to create a record.

Prior to joining Sublime, Jakob Nowell had been cultivating his own musical project, Jakobs Castle, and he intends to return his creative focus there.

While he plans to continue playing "a few Sublime shows every year" to "keep the faces smiling," his primary recording efforts will be dedicated to Jakobs Castle.

Reflecting on the possibility of his feelings changing if the new album performs well, Nowell suggested that such a change would be far in the future, making it a "moot point." He expressed pride in what he considers an impossible achievement, envisioning "Until the Sun Explodes" as an "epilogue, the victory lap, a celebration of Sublime’s history and a love letter to my father and all of his friends and the scene that raised me and touched so many people’s lives." He hopes to use this experience to help other aspiring musicians.

Sublime is set to embark on a busy touring schedule to support the new record.

Upcoming performances include San Diego's Petco Park, the Park Stage in Freehold, N.J., and the Point Break Festival in Virginia Beach, Va.

The band has also organized their own festivals in Portland, Ore., and Salt Lake City, Utah, and will host the Sublime Reefer Madness Cruise in November.
