New York Knicks captain Jalen Brunson has publicly ended the social media feud with Elmo, offering a gesture of forgiveness during the team's NBA championship ticker-tape parade.

This development matters to the audience because it resolves a widely discussed, albeit lighthearted, controversy that captured significant public attention.

The reconciliation occurred on Thursday, where Brunson was filmed holding an Elmo plush doll that featured a cardboard sign reading, "Forgive me PLEASE." The Knicks star was seen kissing the plush while standing beside the NBA championship trophy on his parade float, as captured by Variety.

The origins of the playful dispute trace back to earlier this month when the iconic "Sesame Street" character posted a video on social media stating, "Elmo hopes both teams have fun!" accompanied by four basketball emojis.

This message, referring to the NBA playoff series between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, garnered significant backlash from Knicks fans who criticized Elmo for not openly supporting their team.

Elmo's initial post amassed 27 million views on X, leading to widespread online commentary.

Despite Elmo's attempts to clarify his stance, including a follow-up post saying, "KNICKS that last message!

Elmo didn’t mean to SPUR you on!" and a comment to E!

News that he had "learned that he should not pick favorites for online consumption," the fan reaction persisted.

The intensity of the sentiment was highlighted by a viral video showing a Knicks fan displaying a mock Elmo head on a pike with a "TRAITOR" sign after the Knicks defeated the Spurs in Game 5 on June 13.

Cookie Monster also tried to intervene, posting on X, "Elmo teach me not to eat trophy.

Me teach Elmo to pick a team." However, it was Brunson's public act of forgiveness that ultimately signaled an end to the saga.

Brunson's composed demeanor, which he attributes to an "even-keeled" approach, was also evident in a separate interview on "CBS Mornings." Speaking with Gayle King, Brunson discussed an incident where Spurs star Victor Wembanyama shoved him, stating, "It was definitely a spur-of-the-moment thing, but no matter what, you have to understand the moment, what you’re doing, and what your main goal and focus are.

I’ve always had the ability to stay even-keeled — never too high, never too low.

That’s what prepared me for that situation."
