Shrek 5 Trailer Reveals Plot Details and New Cast Members
Universal Pictures has unveiled a teaser trailer for the highly anticipated *Shrek 5*, confirming a summer 2027 release date.
The footage provides an initial look at the next installment in the beloved animated franchise, which sees the return of original voice actors Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.
This development matters to fans as it offers the first concrete details about the long-awaited sequel, including new characters and a hint at the plot.
Among the new additions to the voice cast is Zendaya, who will portray Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
She is joined by Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo, who are set to voice Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle, respectively.
The film is directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, with Brad Ableson co-directing.
Michael McCullers penned the screenplay, while Christopher Meledandri is credited for the story and producing alongside Gina Shay.
The trailer highlights Donkey's enthusiasm for another adventure with Shrek.
In one scene, Donkey exclaims, “It’s really happening.
Do you know what that means?
I need a makeover — get my arms yoked and my back jacked, my abs ab-ded, maybe even tighten up my badonkadonk.” He later states, “Shrek and Donkey, two stalwart friends off on another whirlwind, big-city adventure.” The teaser concludes with Shrek and Donkey in an unexpected predicament, shown to be in jail.
One particular moment from the trailer that has garnered attention on social media involves the Gingerbread Man.
In the scene, he declares, “I’m caked up like a freaking bakery,” after two gingerbread ladies playfully smack the gumdrops on his backside.
The *Shrek* film series is loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book, *Shrek!* The franchise began 25 years ago with the first film's release in May 2001.
Focusing on the titular ogre and his fairytale companions, the four theatrical movies have collectively earned over $2.9 billion globally.
The last main installment, *Shrek Forever After*, was released in 2010.
The franchise also expanded with two *Puss in Boots* spin-off films, the most recent being *Puss in Boots: The Last Wish* in 2022.
Eddie Murphy, who voices Donkey, previously shared insights into the demands of his role.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter late last year, Murphy mentioned that voicing Donkey can be physically taxing, stating, “You have a headache after a Shrek session.
The donkey has a lot of singing.
You’re on 10, and you’re doing it over and over again.
The great thing, though, is it’s appreciated.
Everybody loves the movie.”
