Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show' Earns Record 9 Emmy Nominations in Final Season
Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” has garnered nine Emmy nominations for its final season, marking the highest number of nominations the show has received during Colbert's 11 years as host.
This significant recognition from the Television Academy comes as the show concludes its run, highlighting its impact in late-night television.
Before this year, the show's previous best was five nominations, achieved consecutively from 2020 to 2022.
The nine nominations span various categories, including outstanding variety series, writing for a variety series, and directing for a variety series.
Other nominations include production design, technical direction and camerawork, lighting design, sound mixing, picture editing, and music direction.
CBS aired the series finale of “The Late Show” on May 21, bringing an end to the 33-year-old franchise, which included 22 years under David Letterman and 11 under Colbert.
The network cited a “purely financial decision” for the cancellation, despite the show's strong ratings.
Colbert’s show is competing in the outstanding variety series category, which has been restructured this year to merge the former outstanding talk series and scripted variety series categories.
It faces competition from programs such as “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Daily Show,” and “Saturday Night Live.”
Under the new Emmy rules, the outstanding variety series is now an “area” award.
This means nominees are not directly competing against each other.
Instead, each show must independently secure a “yes” vote from at least 90% of Emmy voters to win.
If multiple shows meet this threshold, they can all receive an Emmy.
If no nominee reaches 90%, the show with the highest percentage of “yes” votes will win, ensuring at least one winner in the category.
The final season of “The Late Show” concluded an era characterized by its pointed political comedy, which made Colbert a prominent figure in nightly television.
Final-round voting for the Emmys is scheduled for August 17-26, with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Governors Gala on September 5-6.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on September 14 on NBC.
