Veteran British Actor Michael Byrne of 'Indiana Jones' and 'Harry Potter' Dies at 82
Veteran British character actor Michael Byrne, known for his memorable roles in major film franchises and on stage, has died at the age of 82.

Byrne was recognized by audiences for his portrayal of the ruthless Colonel Vogel in Steven Spielberg's 1989 film, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." He also appeared as the elder Gellert Grindelwald, the dark wizard, in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" (2010), a character who had been defeated by Dumbledore.
Beyond these iconic roles, Byrne's filmography included a wide range of characters.
He played a soldier in "Braveheart" (1995) and a concentration camp survivor in Bryan Singer's "Apt Pupil" (1998).
His other film credits featured appearances in "The Good Father" (1985), "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The Saint" (1997), Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York" (2002), "The Sum of All Fears" (2002), and Dustin Hoffman's "Quartet" (2012).
Born in Hampstead, north London, on November 7, 1943, Michael Byrne began his career in theater.
In the 1960s, he performed with the National Theatre Company alongside notable actors such as Laurence Olivier and Maggie Smith.
He also starred in the West End production of "Butley" in 1971 with Alan Bates, a role he reprised for the 1974 film adaptation.
The 1970s saw Byrne frequently cast in war films, including "The Eagle Has Landed" (1976), "A Bridge Too Far" (1977), and "Force 10 From Navarone" (1978).
More recently, he took on stage roles such as Romeo opposite Sian Phillips' Juliet at the Bristol Old Vic in 2010.
On television, he was known for his role as Ted Page on the ITV soap opera "Coronation Street" from 2008 to 2010.
Michael Byrne is survived by his wife, actress Carole Nimmons, whom he married in 1965, their daughters Tara and Bryony, and grandchildren Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.
