The official cause of death for Matt Brown, a former star of Discovery Channel's "Alaskan Bush People," has been ruled as suicide.

The Okanogan County Coroner confirmed that Brown died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This development provides clarity on the circumstances surrounding the reality star's passing, which was previously suspected by his family.

According to the coroner's report, Brown was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of his death, and "subsequent immersion in water" also contributed to the outcome.

His body was recovered from a river in Washington on Saturday.

His brother, Noah Brown, was reportedly present at the scene.

Prior to the official ruling, Matt's younger brother, Bear Brown, had expressed his belief on social media that Matt had died, citing witnesses who claimed to have seen him take his own life.

Bear had previously spoken about Matt's long-standing struggles with alcohol and drugs, noting that Matt had exited "Alaskan Bush People" due to these issues.

Bear Brown had also shared that he had encouraged Matt to maintain his sobriety, and in their last conversation, Matt admitted to having "fallen off the wagon" after a difficult breakup and excessive drinking.

Despite these challenges, Bear stated he "would have never thought that Matt would take his own life."

The Brown family released an emotional statement on Monday, paying tribute to Matt.

Their Instagram post described him as a "beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend," and acknowledged his public persona as one of the original stars of "Alaskan Bush People." They highlighted his intelligence, creativity, and skills as an outdoorsman, fisherman, boatman, artist, and lifelong learner.

The family's statement also addressed Matt's personal struggles, noting that his life included "mistakes, struggles, and painful chapters." However, they emphasized their belief that "no person’s life should be defined solely by their lowest moments."

"Alaskan Bush People," a docudrama following the Brown family's off-grid life in Alaska, aired for 14 seasons on Discovery Channel before concluding in 2022.
