Prime Video's new prequel series, "Elle," a spin-off of the beloved noughties rom-com "Legally Blonde," has premiered to a mixed critical reception.

The series, which is set in 1995, follows a high-school junior Elle Woods, played by newcomer Lexi Minetree, as she navigates a new environment in Seattle after her family is forced to relocate from California.

While some critics have lauded "Elle" as a "sparkling good time" and a "hot pink delight," others have been less enthusiastic, labeling it "boring and tedious" and even "slop." This divergence in opinion highlights the challenge of reviving a cult classic with a dedicated fanbase.

Reese Witherspoon, who famously starred as Elle Woods in the original film, serves as an executive producer for the series.

The original "Legally Blonde" was celebrated for its neo-feminist message and iconic moments, which continue to be referenced today.

The new series aims to capture some of that spirit, focusing on Elle's journey through high school, friendships, and romances.

Critics who found the series lacking often pointed to its pacing and screenwriting.

One review described the scripts as "deliberately half-baked," suggesting a lack of depth in the plot.

Concerns were also raised about the show's humor, with some feeling that potential "killer gags" were reduced to merely "gently amusing" moments.

The plot has been criticized for focusing on "tired teen drama, a pathetic love triangle and a lazy mystery," with some reviewers noting a lack of the "sheer sharpness" that defined the original movie.

Conversely, positive reviews praised the show's commitment to its 90s setting, including its soundtrack and era-specific references.

Minetree's performance as Elle Woods has also received commendation, with critics noting her "cracking comic timing" and impressive ability to embody the character, though some wished she had been given more freedom to make the role her own rather than strictly imitating Witherspoon's portrayal.

Despite the critical divide, the series has already been recommissioned for a second season, indicating confidence from Prime Video.

"Elle" will be available to watch on Prime Video starting July 1, 2026.

The varied critical response suggests that while some viewers may find it a charming escape, others might be left wanting more from this return to the world of Elle Woods.
